Barcelona may be a bit expensive, but here we recommend things to do for free or cheap:
- Explore Park Guell: This stunning park is home to some of Gaudi’s most iconic works, including the famous dragon statue. While the paid part of the park is quite expensive, there’s still plenty to see and do in the free section.
- Visit the Gothic Quarter: Wander the narrow streets of the Gothic Quarter and admire the stunning architecture of the Cathedral of Barcelona. There are also plenty of cafes and restaurants where you can grab a bite to eat without breaking the bank.
- Take a stroll on La Rambla: While it can be touristy, La Rambla is still worth a visit for its lively atmosphere and street performers. If you have a drink or an aperitif in one of the many kiosks, perhaps a rather expensive experience. I recommend that you enter the Gothic Quarter and look for a bar with a small terrace in a central square, you must avoid La Rambla..
- Check out the local markets: Barcelona is home to some of the best markets in Europe, including La Boqueria and Mercat de Sant Antoni. Wander through the stalls and sample some of the local produce and street food
If you’re looking for unique experiences in Barcelona, there are plenty of hidden gems that are worth checking out. Here are some of our favorites:
- The Bunkers del Carmel: This former military base offers panoramic views of the city and is a popular spot for watching the sunset. It’s free to visit and is located in the less touristy neighborhood of El Carmel.
- The Montserrat Monastery: Located about an hour outside of Barcelona, the Montserrat Monastery is a stunning retreat nestled in the mountains. Take a train from Plaça d’Espanya to the base of the mountain, and then hop on the cable car or funicular to reach the monastery.
- The Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site: This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a stunning example of Catalan modernism. The site was once a hospital, and the architecture and design are breathtaking. It’s free to visit on the first Sunday of the month, and guided tours are available for a small fee.
- The Casa de les Punxes: This castle-like building is a lesser-known attraction in Barcelona but is well worth a visit. The building was designed by modernist architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch and features stunning stained glass windows and intricate tilework.
